Backup and Recovery Planning

Know what's backed up, where it lives, and how fast you'd be running again after a bad day.

Backup planning is recovery planning: the useful questions are how long the business would be down and how much recent work would be lost. That answer usually differs by system, which is why it is worth writing down before any tooling is chosen.

Commonly planned around Veeam, Rubrik

When this fits

  • Backups exist but have never been tested
  • A near-miss made recovery time suddenly interesting

Typical planning considerations

  • Which systems the business genuinely cannot run without for a day
  • How much recent work each system could afford to lose, measured in hours
  • Where copies live now, and whether any of them sit somewhere an attacker could not reach from the network
  • The last time a restore was performed, and by whom
  • What is quietly excluded. Cloud data, endpoints, and SaaS platforms are commonly assumed to be covered
  • Who is called first when something is lost, and what they are authorized to do

What Days Dynamics can help coordinate

  • Turning recovery expectations into written requirements per system
  • Comparing protection approaches against those recovery targets rather than feature lists
  • Preparing a request that carries the retention and coverage the plan calls for
  • Planning a restore test and a review rhythm once it is in place
