What a POTS line is

POTS stands for plain old telephone service: an analog voice line delivered over a copper pair from the carrier's central office to your building. It carries its own low-voltage power, which is why an analog phone keeps working during a building power outage, and why so many safety and legacy devices were designed around it.

Most buildings have more of these lines than anyone remembers ordering. They sit behind elevator phones, fire alarm communicators, burglar alarm dialers, gate intercoms, fax machines, and the occasional modem. The monthly bill lists them by phone number, which rarely says what each line is connected to.

Why businesses are replacing copper lines

Carriers are retiring copper networks and moving customers to fiber, IP, and wireless services. Retirement happens wire center by wire center on rolling notices, and remaining legacy business lines are being repriced as regulation winds down. There is no single date when every copper line disappears, but the direction is set and the timelines are getting shorter.

The cost side is now the most visible part. As one example of how legacy-line pricing can escalate, AT&T Florida's General Exchange Guidebook lists business individual and multi-line exchange access lines at $3,995 per line per month effective June 1, 2026. Actual pricing varies by carrier, service, and location, and other carriers have raised rates on the lines they still serve. A building that has not reviewed its analog lines in years is often paying for lines nobody can trace to a device.

The operational reasons matter as much. Copper plant is aging and repairs take longer. A line that fails quietly behind a fire panel or an elevator phone is a life-safety problem, not a telecom inconvenience. Replacing lines on a plan, with the inspector involved, is far better than replacing them after a notice arrives or a failure is found during an inspection.

What still depends on analog phone lines

The list below covers the common cases. Every device has to be checked individually: how it dials, what it expects to hear, whether it needs line power, and what the equipment's manufacturer and your local inspector will accept as a replacement path.

Device compatibility and local requirements have to be evaluated line by line. A replacement that suits a fax machine may not be acceptable for an elevator phone.

How modern POTS replacement works

At a high level, each analog line moves from the carrier's copper pair to a managed device installed near the equipment it serves. The device presents a standard analog line to the elevator phone, panel, or dialer, and carries the call over a cellular network, a broadband connection, or both.

Life-safety lines are the exception to any shortcut. Elevator emergency communication is governed by the elevator safety code adopted in your jurisdiction, commonly ASME A17.1, and fire alarm communication paths by the fire code adopted locally, commonly NFPA 72. The adopted edition, the equipment listings, battery backup duration, supervision, and testing requirements are set by the authority having jurisdiction, and the replacement is not finished until the inspector accepts it.

  • A list of elevators, fire alarm panels, alarm systems, gates, and fax machines per site
  • The name of your elevator contractor, fire alarm company, and alarm monitoring company
  • Any carrier notices about copper retirement or rate changes you have received
  • Who manages each building day to day, and who can grant access to equipment rooms

Questions buyers ask

How do I find out which of my lines are still copper?

Start with the phone bill. Lines listed as business lines, measured lines, or with a per-line monthly charge on a legacy carrier account are usually analog. Then walk the building: elevator machine rooms, the fire alarm panel, alarm keypads, gates, and any fax machine. The Line Audit does exactly this with you.

Can an elevator emergency phone use a cellular replacement?

Often, yes, with a device intended for elevator emergency communication and accepted by your inspector. The elevator safety code adopted in your jurisdiction sets the requirements for two-way communication, battery backup, and testing, and the authority having jurisdiction has the final say. We confirm the path with your elevator contractor and inspector before any line is moved.

What happens to the fire alarm panel when the copper line is retired?

A fire alarm communicator that loses its line stops reporting to the central station, which is a code and safety issue. Replacement uses a communicator or gateway listed for fire alarm signaling, installed by a qualified fire alarm company, tested with the monitoring center, and accepted by the inspector.

Do I have to replace every line at once?

No. The audit ranks lines by risk and cost. Life-safety lines and lines with retirement notices usually go first; a fax line can wait or be retired outright. Multi-location businesses often move sites in waves that fit inspection and vendor schedules.

Will the replacement work during a power outage?

Replacement devices for safety systems include battery backup, and the required backup duration depends on the code adopted where the building is and the type of system. Battery condition and signal are supervised so a failure is reported rather than discovered later.

How long does replacement take?

A single building with a handful of lines can move in a few weeks once devices are ordered and the inspector is scheduled. Portfolios take longer and are planned in waves. Carrier retirement notices can compress the timeline, which is why the audit is worth doing before a notice arrives.

Does Days Dynamics guarantee code compliance?

No provider can. Code requirements vary by jurisdiction and by the edition adopted there, and acceptance rests with the authority having jurisdiction.
