What should you decide before buying anything?

  • The real constraint: your internet service or the internal network. They need different fixes.
  • Which devices should move to cable, giving wireless capacity back to the ones that need it.
  • Segmentation requirements from a payment processor, an insurer, or a customer contract.
  • Who manages the equipment afterwards, which narrows the platform choice more than any feature comparison.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

  • Adding access points to fix a coverage complaint without planning capacity, which often makes performance worse.
  • Replacing wireless on top of a backbone that cannot carry it. Cabling and switching come first, then wireless.
  • Buying unmanaged equipment, which hides exactly the information you will need when something goes wrong.
  • Leaving default credentials in place and management interfaces reachable. This is the most common finding on a network nobody has reviewed.
  • Treating documentation as optional. An undocumented network is only supportable by whoever built it.

Frequently asked questions

How do we know if our Wi-Fi needs replacing or fixing?

Look at the pattern. Isolated faults on supported equipment usually mean a repair. Complaints that follow locations, worsen with occupancy, or appear on gear that no longer receives firmware updates usually mean the design has been outgrown.

Do we need a site survey?

For anything larger than a small office, yes. Building materials, racking, glass, refrigeration, and ceiling height affect coverage far more than square footage does, and a survey is what stops access-point placement from being a guess.

Can we keep our existing cabling?

Sometimes. It depends on the category, condition, and test results of the runs feeding the new equipment. Cabling gets checked before equipment is specified, because it decides what speeds you can usefully buy.

Will the office be down while the work happens?

Most of this work can be phased by area or scheduled outside working hours. The cutover sequence, and any interruption it involves, is agreed with you before anything is unplugged.
